The Buddha said, “In sentient beings, ten actions are virtuous and ten are evil. What are they? Three pertain to the body, four to the mouth ³⁸, and three to the mind. Killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct pertain to the body. Malicious, abusive, false, and frivolous speech pertain to the mouth. Envy, anger, and ignorance pertain to the mind. These ten deeds, known as the ten evils, are not in accord with the Noble Way. To renounce the ten evils is to practice the ten virtues.”

JDK 8u172 contains IANA time zone data version 2018c. For more information, refer to Timezone Data Versions in the JRE Software.

Security Baselines

The security baselines for the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) at the time of the release of JDK 8u172 are specified in the following table:

JRE Expiration Date

The JRE expires whenever a new release with security vulnerability fixes becomes available. Critical patch updates, which contain security vulnerability fixes, are announced one year in advance on Critical Patch Updates, Security Alerts and Third Party Bulletin. This JRE (version 8u172) will expire with the release of the next critical patch update scheduled for July 17, 2018.

For systems unable to reach the Oracle Servers, a secondary mechanism expires this JRE (version 8u172) on August 17, 2018. After either condition is met (new release becoming available or expiration date reached), the JRE will provide additional warnings and reminders to users to update to the newer version. The changes made under JDK-8033530 introduced an inconsistency between the implementation for and the documentation of the following methods:

• java.awt.Toolkit.getImage(URL u)
• java.awt.Toolkit.createimage(URL u)

The description in the API document should read:

This method first checks if there is a security manager installed. If so, the method calls the security managers checkPermission() method with the corresponding permission to ensure that the access to the image or the image creation is allowed. If the connection to the specified URL requires either URLPermission or SocketPermission, then URLPermission is used for security checks.

 Touch Keyboard for Swing/AWT Text Components

This release adds support for automatically showing the touch keyboard for Swing/AWT text components on Microsoft Windows 8 or later. A user can display the touch keyboard either by using a touch screen to tap the text component area or by using a mouse to click in the area, when a keyboard is not attached to a computer.

The system property awt.touchKeyboardAutoShowIsEnabled controls whether this functionality is enabled in the JDK. This functionality is enabled by default. However, if the functionality is not needed, the user can switch it off from the command line by setting the system property to false:

-Dawt.touchKeyboardAutoShowIsEnabled=false

The April security release consists of security updates for the following software:
Internet Explorer
Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office Services and Web Apps
ChakraCore
Adobe Flash Player
Microsoft Malware Protection Engine
Microsoft Visual Studio

Please note the following information regarding the security updates:

Windows 10 updates are cumulative. The monthly security release includes all security fixes for vulnerabilities that affect Windows 10, in addition to non-security updates. The updates are available via the Microsoft

Update Catalog.

Starting in March 2017, a delta package will be available on the Microsoft Update Catalog for Windows 10 version 1607 and newer. This delta package contains just the delta changes between the previous month and the current release.

Updates for Windows RT 8.1 and Microsoft Office RT software are only available via Windows Update.
In addition to security changes for the vulnerabilities, updates include defense-in-depth updates to help improve security-related features.
